The Yorkshire Terrier is a small / toy breed.  They are non-shedding and hypo-allergenic.  They are a great dog for allergy sufferers and their small size makes them ideal for apartments or small homes.  However they are high energy and do require daily exercise or play.

 

The Yorkshire Terrier is very curious by nature.  Yorkshire Terriers are oblivious to their size and will be good watch dogs.  They are also very intelligent dogs.  They have a loving nature, very loyal to their owner but sometimes suspicious of strangers.   They do better with more mature children.  They don’t do well with children that have aggressive behavior or teasing.  They may have problems with other small animals due to their dominant personalities.

 

Yorkshire Terriers (Often referred to as
Yorkies) It's a very popular toy breed.  Adult Yorkies usually weigh between 5-7lbs.  Yorkshire Terriers originated in England.  The mid 19th century Yorkshire weighed around 15lbs and was used to keep down the rat population in coal pits and cotton mills.  They were also used in rat killing contests for entertainment.  Of course that image is far from the pampered pet that a Yorkshire represents today.  They became very popular with the ladies and so began the transformation to the pampered pet that often is found sporting a bow in it's hair.
